In case, you are changing the existing drainage or installing a new drainage system altogether, you have to bring this to the attention of the Building Control Department. You have to give information about how you’d install the drainage and this will be inspected as the work progresses to ensure that the work complies with the local building regulations. In case, you are changing some areas, then you do not need to really inform them; but a double check on this issue by calling them is advisable.

There are two types of water systems: Foul Water Systems that stand for the water that comes from the toilets, bathrooms, kitchens, garage etc. The water from here should go to the foul water drain system. The other type of water system is known as surface water, this is discharged into a watercourse, soak way, surface water sewer or in case of old properties, into the same foul water drainage system. If both the systems are combined, the rainwater pipes move to the foul water drains through mechanisms known as gully traps that prevent bad smelling from escaping from the drains. In any case, you should make sure that the surface water drainage system does not come in contact with foul water.

When you install drain trench, ensure that any foundations in the building are not disturbed. Do not dig the trench too long before installing the pipe. You have to make sure that the pipes are laid as fast as possible; then fill the trench back after the system is tested and inspected duly. Keep the trench narrow as possible but there should be enough room to work in it, say the width of the pipe and 150 mm on each side. The trench base should be even and clean and not have bricks and stones lining it. You have to also get hold of a good material for the trench base if the existing material is not suited to the project.

Do not use bricks or hard materials to fix the pipe in the trench, this can damage the pipe. There should be uniform support that justice to the length of the pipe. Once the laid pipes have been inspected properly, you can have sandy material evenly backfilled to a depth of at least 100 millimeters above the pipe.
